A Clapsaddle Hallowe'en

A very Clapsaddle Hallowe'en

Have you ever seen this picture before?

What about this one?

I'm sure you have seen pictures like this as they are reproduced in countless stores across the country.  What is so significant about these images?

They are Clapsaddle postcards!  Ever heard of that?  No?  Well I'm about to tell you!

Ellen Clapsaddle was an American illustrated and the most prolific postcard and greeting card artist of her time (and I daresay, ever?).  She was born in 1865 in New York.  She was always good at painting and illustrating, and in her free time sent her work to NYC publishers.

Her work was very popular and she quickly became known for her illustrations.  She was hired in 1906 by the Wolf Company.  Her postcards were made from 1898 to 1915.  She created over 3,000 designs during this time.

Her work to this day remains popular.  Her cards are mainly centered around holidays.  Her Halloween cards are her most popular.  In mint condition they can sell for $100  Let's take a look at some of them and see why!

I like how Mr. Wise Owl wants to know who's giving the greeting

Of course I'm a sucker for cats.

Remember, Zeppelins were very high-tech back then!

A very cute little kid

I do like this one a lot

A very large pumpkin, big enough to sit in!

This one I think is kind of funny

love this one!

Another pretty famous image of hers

I don't know what the letters in the pumpkin mean?

This is one of my favorites

As is this one. Both include a witch, a cat, and a pumpkin!

Aren't these postcards CUTE?!  Hard to believe they are 100 years old or older!!  Notice on all of them they are identified by her signature, Ellen H. Clapsaddle.  That's the easiest way to identify her postcards if you are unable to recognize them by her style.

She has many many more designs, too many to feature!

What I like for these as Halloween decorating is that 1. they are antique.  2.  They are unique.  (rhymes!) and 3. they aren't "scary" or Halloween grotesque.

You can search for Clapsaddle postcards on eBay.

I love this Clapsaddle wreath:  I saw it at Roger's Gardens but found it online here too.

Halloween Vignette Decor Ideas with Steiff

Steiff Halloween Vignette

I have updated my buffet table from the pumpkin Juliska china, vintage repro postcards, AND my brand new Steiff animals!

The new Steiff mohair animals are "Scary Cat" and "Pumpkin Bear".

A look at the whole vignette...

new vignette with my new animals!
A look at the left side... reproduction Clapsaddle Halloween postcards, candle with Mackenzie Child ribbon, my new favorite Juliska pumpkin colored "Autumn Harvest" dish!

My brand new "Scary cat"! Scary cat is a reproduction from the original Steiff mohair animal made 111 years ago!  She is also made of soft mohair.  Came home last night in the middle of the night and she tricked me into thinking there was a real cat there!

I like how the Steiff cat arches her back just like this black cat in the postcard!

pumpkin bear has a hard time standing by himself and leans against the wall
I tend not to like the "creepy" side of Halloween with gross skeletons, bugs, and whatnot.  I like more of the harvest-side with multicolored pumpkins, owls, harvest colors, and Jack-o-lanterns.
a closer look at the other side
I like how the cat is popping out of the pumpkin in the post card kind of like the Steiff bear is...

A look from above!

Hope you enjoyed!

Halloween Tablescape

A Tablescape for Halloween!

Today I'm sharing with you my tablescape I made in for Halloween this year.  I was looking at my china and thought, oh! I have black dishes, orange dishes, and purple goblets!  These are all the colors of Halloween!
A shot from above!
I used my favorite velvet pumpkins as my centerpiece.  I also added the battery operated candles that light up at night.

A view of the centerpiece
The china is Juliska "Autumn Harvest" (the orange plate) and "Country Estate".  Also used purple Juliska goblets.  Napkins are antique linen, pumpkin napkin rings for pier 1, and burlap placemats from Etsy!

A look without the orange plate.

And now for night time!  How'd that Jack-o-lantern get in the center?  I would have it completely black in the room but my camera can't shoot in that light, as you see it's struggling here!

Boo!
I have been enjoying my Halloween tablescape.  Hope you enjoyed too!

Halloween is a Hoot!

Hoot if you're cute!

Recently I made a Fall themed tablescape with my owls.  You can see that here: Owl Tablescape for Fall!.  However, I just expanded my owl collection and have now moved them to the bar in the kitchen.

This post was just featured on The Scoop! on October 14, 2013!

Boo Who?
This guy on the end is new.  Isn't he cute?  I also have more fall themed candles: now have more acorns and little owls.

I also added some faux Fall foliage.  Additionally I added my repro Clapsaddle postcard to the mix!

Love this postcard!
I like how it looks like the owls are sitting on the branches.
aren't we cute?

I'm loving this new little scene.  Hoot if you're cute!

Be sure to check out The Scoop! where my post is featured and to see a whole bunch of other great ideas!!
